Senate Panel Funds Rural Housing Programs for 2007

USDA rural housing maintained level funding for most FY 2007 programs in a bill approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee on June 22. HR 5384 now moves to the Senate floor. Many programs received increases in the House version of HR 5384, which passed on May 23. House-Senate conferees will have to resolve differences. In the Senate farm labor housing, Sec. 502 direct loans, and Sec. 523 self-help grants did not receive the increases provided by the House. The Senate bill provides $100 million for Section 515 loans, $335.4 million for one-year rental assistance contracts, $28 million for multifamily housing revitalization, and $6.3 million for the Rural Community Development Initiative. The Senate bill also opens farm labor housing to processing workers. Both House and Senate versions of HR 5384 and accompanying legislative reports are available on thomas.loc.gov.
