Trainings Focus on Improving Housing Conditions for Native Americans

In April 2003 HAC held a Native American housing conference in Denver. Funded by the Ford Foundation and co-sponsored by the National American Indian Housing Council, the conference focused on ways to improve Indian housing conditions using nonprofit organizations and funding sources that are not targeted to Native Americans. The vast majority of the over 100 participants were enthusiastic about how much they learned, and asked HAC to sponsor more training on Native American issues.

HAC also held Building Capacity, Building Homes: A Practitioner’s Workshop on Native American Housing and Economic Development on June 23-25, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. This
training was convened in partnership with the National American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC) and was also sponsored by the Ford Foundation. Additional support was provided by Fannie Mae and the Enterprise Foundation. This training session offered details on the development planning process and single family and multifamily housing production in Indian Country. It was attended by 120 participants.

In June 2005, the Rural Housing and Economic Development Gateway, a program administered by HAC with funding from HUD, sponsored a Native American training in Rapid City, S.D. that, like the 2004 training event, focused on housing, economic, and infrastructure development. Key program resources were featured, as well as single- and multifamily models. In addition,
HAC provided a financial management training track that included and benefited both housing authority and nonprofit housing development staff. Attendance at the Rapid City session
reached 65.

HAC is beginning to plan for 2006 its fourth Native American housing training with an emphasis on approaches to creating and maintaining both personal and housing assets in Indian country.
